Rules Directly Regulating Mining

All Rules

The following federal rules are based on mining-specific legislation that affects all mining activities, regardless of the ownership of the minerals.

Metal and NonMetal Mine Safety
Affecting all mines that remove minerals from the ground for profit, these regulations are found in 30 CFR Parts 1 through 199. They are administered by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, which is located in the Department of Labor.

All Surface Coal Mining Operations and Reclamation
These regulations cover all coal mining regardless of the coal's ownership and they are found in 30 CFR Part 700 through 999. They cover both active and abandoned coal mines, these regulations are administered by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement which is located in the Department of the Interior.
